What Car should you Buy?

For most folks, the car they own is probably the second most expensive asset they own, the most expensive being their home. While most people take time to design their homes, same folks barely put in any thoughts into what types of cars they buy. Granted that some of our car buys are dictated by economic situations and finances, there are many instances where even folks who are not faced with neither the former nor later, make same exact mistakes. In this brief piece, we explore what should drive our choices of what we buy, when it comes to cars.

First and foremost, at it’s core, a car is simply a utility; meaning, buying one should be purpose driven. Simply put, before buying a car, the buyer should ask themselves some questions, including:

  • How will the car be used – that is, is this a general commuting city car or will I be doing a lot of long-distance travels in the car?
  • Is this a family car – that, do I have children etc?
  • Will I be hauling things with this car – that is, do constantly have the need to move heavy objects that requires a lot of space?
  • One key important question to ask is, how are the roads where I live?

As you can see, the list of questions are exhaustive, but the idea here is to identify what and how you most likely be using the car. None of these are cast in stone, but identifying these before buying, helps the buy the right car for the right purpose(s).

Pick up Truck

Taking these questions one at a time, you will notice that if you live in a big city and barely travel out a lot, a small fuel-efficient car is all you probably need.

For the second item, it would not make much sense to buy a two-door car, if you have a family with children. For item number three, a pickup truck or a car with a huge trunk would be much better if you will be hauling a lot of things around. Ease of entry and exit are the key criteria if you fall into this class. One critical and often overlook criteria when buying a car is the environment and roads where the car will be primarily used. Primarily is the key word here. If you live in a hilly terrain, or an area with very bad roads, then, a four-Wheel Drive car would be the ideal car for this type of environment. It would also be much better to buy a car that sits high up and not one that will scrape the roads and easily get stuck in the muds on bad roads.
