Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo State, has revealed that the state's health sector requires around 200 new doctors to efficiently run the state's primary healthcare centers.

On Monday, Obaseki revealed this during a courtesy visit to his office by the new executives of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in the state.

"We need over 200 additional doctors in the system," he stated, "who will be in the community to take command of the Primary Healthcare Centres around the state and who must be engaged and encouraged to stay here."

The governor stated that his administration's main focus is on how to generate more doctors by enhancing the basic education system and providing high-quality education.

Obaseki urged doctors to work together to maintain healthcare reforms, ensuring a robust and equitable system that provides Edo residents with efficient, high-quality, and cheap healthcare.

He stated that he is working on a comprehensive overhaul of the sector and is putting in place systems to prevent healthcare workers from leaving the nation.

"We need need more doctors, especially given the way doctors are fleeing the country in pursuit of greener pastures. The institutions that generate doctors must be strengthened. "To generate more doctors, we are upgrading our educational system," Obaseki stated.
