A 13-year marriage in Akwa Ibom has ended due to a pastor's infidelity.

A 13-year marriage has been dissolved by an Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in the Eket Local Government Area, following allegations that the 36-year-old wife slept with a pastor of one of the state's new generational churches.

The husband is also a pastor, according to reports.

Justice Pius Idiong, the presiding judge who dissolved the marriage, voiced concern about the increased number of divorce and separation cases as a result of some churches' and pastors' activities.

"It is a great pain that the church and its ministers, who are supposed to be agents and apostles of family sustainability, which the Catholic Pontiff, St. Pope John Paul II referred to as'the domestic church,' are the predecessors and catalysts," Idiong added.

The fact that the said man of God was alleged to have given the pastor's wife some substance to administer to her husband, according to the court, was even more concerning, prompting the 42-year-old husband to seek dissolution of the marriage.

"The couple can no longer live together in an era where domestic violence is at an all-time high, resulting in married couples taking their own lives," Idiong said.

"It is preferable for the pair to live apart than for one of them to die as a result of marital discord."

“The marriage between the petitioner and the respondent, dated November 28, 2009, and celebrated in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Uyo, under the watchful eyes of the marriage registrar, is dissolved forthwith.”

The court also gave custody of the two children of the marriage, between the ages of eight and 10, to their father, “subject to the condition that their mother shall not be denied access to her children.”
