President Muhammadu Buhari has denounced the assassination of Deborah Samuel, a second-year student at Sokoto's Shehu Shagari College of Education, on charges of blasphemy against Muhammad (SAW), the Prophet of Islam.

In a statement released by his media adviser, Malam Garba Shehu, on Friday in Abuja, the president expressed his displeasure at the news of the young lady's murder by other students.

According to him, the matter requires a thorough, unbiased investigation of everything that occurred prior to and during the occurrence.

"Where violations occur, as is reported to be the case in this instance," he said, "the law does not allow anyone to take matters into their own hands."

“Moreover, religious leaders preach that it is not for the believer to judge the actions of another person.

“The constituted authority must be allowed to deal with such matters when they arise.

“No person has the right to take the law in his or her own hands in this country. Violence has and never will solve any problem.”

Buhari also ordered the Ministries of Material and Culture, Police Affairs, and Communications and Digital Economy to collaborate with GSM carriers and tech firms to help stop the propagation of false and inflammatory information on social media.

The president expressed his sympathies to the family of the dead student and wished a speedy recovery to all those hurt.

He praised the Sokoto State Government's quick response to the situation and urged religious and community leaders to educate individuals about the importance of exercising their right to free expression properly.

While an investigation is underway to determine the remote and proximate causes of the tragedy, Buhari has called for restrained media remarks and public calm. (NAN)
