The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested a man, Nweke Chadikaobi, for allegedly assaulting his 10-year-old niece, Emmanuel Oluebibe.

In a statement signed by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, the command’s Commissioner of Police, Babaji Sunday, ordered the arrest of the culprit after a video showing how Oluebibe was battered went viral on social media.

The statement read in part, “The CP, Babaji Sunday, ordered an immediate investigation and arrest of the suspect and the rescue of the minor for medical attention and other forms of intervention needed in the protection of her human rights and dignity.”

The video, obtained by PUNCH Metro, showed some adults tendering to the minor, who had bruises on her back, while she alleged that her aunt’s husband beat her up for bedwetting.

The police spokesperson said the suspect, who was arrested on Tuesday, upon interrogation admitted to the crime.

The police confirmed to our correspondent that the victim had been handed over to officials of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons.

Adeh said, “The 10-year-old victim was handed over to NAPTIP in order for her to get special care and re-traumatisation.”
